What is Organic Quinoa?
Scientific name: Chenopodium quinoa
Quinoa is a flowering annual plant from the amaranth family. It is a herbaceous plant grown as a crop primarily for its edible seeds.
Quinoa dates back three to four thousand years ago when the Incas first realized that the seed was fit for human consumption, it was considered the ‘gold of the Incas’ because they believed it increased the strength and stamina of their warriors, and in fact it did. They soon claimed it as ‘the mother of all grains.’
Our organic quinoa has been grown by local Peruvian farmers who specialise in cultivating their products with the highest organic standards involving tradition, culture and quality.
The seeds are rich in protein, dietary fibre, B vitamins, and dietary minerals in amounts greater than many other grains, making it a superior favourite for many for its clear beneficial properties.
Quinoa is gluten-free, high in protein (in fact, the grain with the highest amounts of protein) and is one of the few plant foods to contain sufficient amounts of all nine essential amino acids.
It is also high in fibre, magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, folate, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin E and various beneficial antioxidants. Yes, we know, that’s a lot… But it’s true.
The high source of fibre is widely known to relieve constipation. It further helps to prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and diabetes.
It helps lower cholesterol and glucose levels and may help you lose weight.
Due to its many nutrients its benefits are countless and you’d do yourself a shock if you researched further on its properties and benefits.
Quinoa is one of the healthiest and most nutritious foods on the planet.
We recommend quinoa consumption in its traditional soup as we believe this to be the best form of benefitting from its nutrients, but you can easily prepare plenty of dishes such as salads or even add to desserts like cookies and cakes if you prefer; the sky is the limit!
